In line with the number of tourists visiting Jeju Island exceeding 12 million, the Korea Consumer Agency (www.kca.go.kr) opened the Center for Protecting Travel Consumer in Jeju-si (city) on March 11, 2015 in order to protect inbound/outbound tourists, and signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) on business cooperation with the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Jeju National University, and the National Council of Consumer Organization in Jeju.

Heads of consumer protection organizations and interested parties attended the opening ceremony, including Huh Hyang-jin, President of Jeju National University, Gwon Yeong-soo, Vice-Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and Kim Tae-seong and Moon Yeong-hee, Standing Presidents of the National Council of Consumer Organization in Jeju.

The Center's efforts will focus on resolving complaints of inbound/outbound tourists (namely, the sharply growing number of Chinese travelers) and preventing consumer damages. As part of such efforts, a consumer protection governance will be established with relevant local institutions and continuous monitoring and surveying will be carried out related to the tourism industry.

With the opening of the Center, the KCA was able to further strengthen business partnerships with the government, academics and private sector in order to better protect the rights of inbound/outbound travelers and also enhance Jeju's tourism industry competitiveness.

Elsewhere, the KCA partnered with automobile, household appliance, and smartphone makers to provide free maintenance service to local residents along with legal counseling at the Jeju Sports Complex.

According to an official at the KCA, the opening of the Center is to ensure the better protection of travel consumers in Jeju and contribute to boosting the competitiveness of Jeju's tourism industry.
