<Results of testing Quality of Ramyun>

    

■ Ramyun(Korean instant noodle)'s saturated fact and sodium accounted for 51.3% and 86.5% of daily nutrient reference values, respectively.

 

6.3∼9.1g saturated fat per pack and the fat varies among products (1.4 times difference), and the average is 7.7g per pack (51.3% of daily nutrient reference values(15g))

- Palm oil which is used when frying noodle of Ramyun and contains more saturated fat than vegetable oil, leading excessive intake of saturated fat. Thus, it is necessary to replace with the alternative which has unsaturated fat.

 

1,350∼2,069mg sodium per pack and 1.5 times difference among products, and the average is 1,729mg per pack (86.5% of daily nutrient reference values(2,000mg))

- According to the policy of reducing sodium supported by government, some businesses started promoting products which contain lower sodium, but still high

 

It is important for businesses to reduce saturated fat and sodium in order to improve consumers' dietary life.

 

■ Differences of nutrients among products, and it is desirable for consumers to check information of nutrients

The average nutrient intake per pack contains protein 56.3%, carbohydrate 71.6%, and fat 97.6% of nutrient reference values per meal, so it is not appropriate for substitution food.

 

29.2∼221.2mg calcium, the contain varies by products(7.6 times difference), and accounts for 4.2∼31.6% of nutrient reference values(700mg)

 

■ Carcinogen, such as benzopyrene remain undetected, and no radiation exposure to the products

 

    It is necessary to control amount of intake to consume less saturated fat, sodium, etc. which has potential risks, although Ramyun is popular food in Korea.

   Korea Consumer Agency(www.kca.go.kr) provided choice information to consumers through quality test, since there had been no research of quality and safety, even though Ramyun as convenient and economical processed food was sold in various types.

   The KCA researched on nutrients and tasty components, safety, condition of labelling, price, etc. of the most popular twelve Ramyun brands.

   Comparative information of Ramyun would be offered on the web-site of 'Smart Consumer (www.smartconsumer.go.kr)' operated by the Korea Fair Trade Commission from the viewpoint of three-year plan for eco-nomy innovation and achieving government 3.0.
