Always save the docket, when you drop off clothes
On occasions garments are lost, no compensation was paid for 53.1%.
In spring, many consumers drop off winter clothing at dry cleaners prior to storing the item for long period. However, as there are many cases of items being lost at laundry every year, consumers are advised to take special caution especially at this change of seasons when dropping off several clothes from the last season at a time.
In total, the 1372 Consumer Counseling Center (www.ccn.go.kr) received 7,162 cases related to clothes being lost at dry cleaners from Jan. 1, 2009 to March 31, 2013. The statistics also tell that over 1,000 complaints are made every year. Out of the 7,162 cases, 279 cases were filed to the KCA for consumer redress.
Consumer damage related to clothes lost by year
(Unit: cases)
The Korea Consumer Agency (KCA) conducted an analysis on the 279 cases field for consumer redress and found that no compensation was made for 53.1% (148 cases) of consumers affected by the damage. Of these, cleaners did not admit responsibility for 54.7% (81 cases), while cleaners avoided responsibility the rest 45.3% (67 cases) although the responsibility was proved to rest in the hands of the cleaners.
The reason why cleaners did not fulfill their liability for the items lost is largely that consumers were not offered with the ticket or claim stub when dropping off clothes and could not prove that the consumer dropped off them. Moreover, when the items were left at the cleaners and picked up past several days or even several months, where the responsibility lies failed to be clarified easily.
Based on these findings, the KCA gave tips and warnings to consumers to prevent the damages from occurring. The Agency advised consumers to take the docket when dropping in the garment at dry cleaners and check the number of items on the spot when picking up the clothes from the cleaner, also recommending any detachable details of the garment should be noted in the docket. Also, the KCA is going to make a recommendation of hanging signs of producing a docket by consulting with the Korea Association of Dry Cleaning and Laundry. |
