Safety regulation to protect elderly people from harm as a result of sexual activity is needed

More than two thirds of elderly Korean people remain sexually active. However, many of them have been infected with a sexually transmitted disease, as well as experiencing the side effects of medical treatment to resolve such problems as impotence, according to a survey released by the Korea Consumer Agency (KCA).

The survey, which was conducted on 500 people over the age of 60, showed that 62.4 percent (or 312 out of every 500) of elderly people are sexually active. The figure has increased significantly compared to ten years ago, when only 30-40 percent of those aged over 60 responded that they were sexually active. Notably, the percentage of sexual activity among people in their 80s stands at over 10 percent, indicating a threefold increase compared to a decade ago.

The increasing use of erectile-dysfunction pills or other stimulants attests to the increase in the number of elderly people who remain sexually active. The increased availability of pills such as Viagra has transformed the sexual activities of the elderly. This increased activity can be seen in a positive light in terms of conjugal relations, as the intimacy and satisfaction provided by sexual activity also brings psychological stability. However, since the consumption of erectile-dysfunction pills can have certain side effects, elderly people are advised to consult with a doctor before taking them.

According to the KCA report, 36.9 percent of the survey’s respondents claimed to have purchased erectile-dysfunction pills. Among those who bought such pills, 62 percent purchased Viagra. It was reported that the purchase of these pills is increasing by 10 percent every year. However, over 67 percent of those who consumed erectile-dysfunction pills experienced side effects such as high blood pressure, facial flushing, and bloodshot eyes.

Over 25 percent of the respondents said they had bought sex-assistance stimulants over the past three years, but the side effects from these were also high. Over 44 percent of elderly people who used them acquired skin spots and changes in skin color, as well as sustaining injuries or hemorrhaging.

Due to the increase in the sexual activities of the elderly and their purchase of sex-assistance pills and sex aids, greater caution and special education are needed concerning their usage. As the purchase channels for these pills or sex aids are non-official, problems can arise from the use of non-approved ones. They should be purchased at a pharmacy or certified medical equipment stores. Above all, education on safe sex for the elderly must be strengthened, and a safety regulation on sex aids is also necessary.
