Korea’s 16th anniversary celebration was held for Consumer Day on Dec. 3rd, hosted by the Korea Fair Trade Commission and supervised by the Korea Consumer Agency (President: Young-seen Kim, www.kca.go.kr) and the Korea National Council of Consumer Organization. The event, held at Grand Auditorium of the KFTC, was run to raise public awareness for consumer protection and consumer rights.

The ceremony was participated by around 400 parties interested including Chairman Dong-soo Kim of the KFTC, President Young-seen Kim of the KCA, and local government officials and company representatives in charge of consumer affairs.

During the ceremony, those participants had a chance to watch a celebrating PR video for major accomplishments of consumer groups, the KCA, and the KFTC for 2011, consumer interviews on major consumer complaints and consumer redress and its process, and also congratulatory messages from the OECD Committee on Consumer Protection and the Consumer Affairs Agency in Japan.

Meanwhile, during her congratulatory message, the KCA President made a resolution to come up with effective measures to protect consumers in local areas and also draw up plans to improve legislations and systems related to cross-border consumer issues.

During the event, meritorious medals (89 cases in total) were awarded to individuals and organizations in recognition of their efforts for consumer empowerment. Through his congratulatory speech, the KFTC Chairman Dong-soo Kim sent a congratulatory message to all the awardees for their contribution to consumer empowerment and said consumers will play a great and active role in leading market change in the coming age and there is a need to re-establish relations between consumers and companies as a win-win partnership, accordingly.
