Safety accidents involving children play equipments on playground continues to occur.
The Korea Consumer Agency (President: Kim Young-seen, www.kca.go.kr) analyzed 2,063 consumer injury cases related to children play equipments reported to the Consumer Injury Surveillance System (CISS) of the KCA from 2008 to March this year. According to the analysis, number of the injury cases involving playground equipments continued to rise every year as seen in 328 cases, 686 (+209%), and 903 (+132%) in 2008, 2009, and 2010, respectively. The most common playground equipment that led to safety accidents was slide (44.9%). Meanwhile, falls (36.2%) were the number one cause for injury and the most common injury part of body was face (30.3%), as children often landed on their face or head.
The KCA conducted a safety check-up on play equipments in 36 playgrounds in Seoul on its own and found that 26 playground sites (72.2%) were partially damaged or found to be with hazards to children. Also, 18 sites were found to have no sign labeling installation check or saying safety tips for users. Also, 18 sites were found to have damaged connection or protruding joint parts of play equipments with the equipments of 14 sites not being fastened up properly.
Based on these findings, the KCA is going to advise the Ministry of Public Administration and Security for urgent government support for safe children play equipments and strengthened maintenance, management, and safety check-up for children playground. Also, the KCA continued to ask children to follow playground safety rules and guidelines when playing. Date of News Report Release : July 22nd, 2011
