With repeated heavy snow and cold weather this winter, use of deicing products such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) has drastically increased to facilitate snow removal and anti-freezing. Against this backdrop, special cautions are needed for consumers to wash cars contaminated with CaCl2 and other deicers.
Calcium chloride (CaCl2) is commonly used as deicers as 1) it produces an exothermic reaction to surrounding moisture; and 2) gives off heat and melts the surrounding snow at high speed as it melts. However, the Korea Consumer Agency (President: Kim, Young-Seen, www.kca.go.kr) sent a wake-up call to consumers that quick car wash is advisable after driving on the road sprayed with heavy CaCl2. The KCA continued to sound a warning to the nation that severe corrosion could take place quite fast if CaCl2, which is mixed up with the snow and absorbed into the vehicle, is exposed to damaged or broken areas of car panel [Picture 1]; or left long hours in cracks of parts of underbody [Picture 2].
