Falling-off risk of GPS Windshield holder - Falling-off accidents happen many times in winter
Date 2009-12-07 Hit 2298
Great care is needed as GPS (in-car) windshield holder falls off to lead a GPS monitor to be broken and also cause other safety accidents.

The Korea Consumer Agency (President: Kim, Young-Seen, www.kca.go.kr) conducted a safety test on ten different kinds of GPS windshield holders. According to the adhesion test result, problems with adhesion strength appear with temperature changed. In low-temperature condition in particular, bond-performance problems occurred often. In case of GPS (four items) with over two years of usage, every six items showed weak performance of adhesion after six hours of use in low temperature (-15℃), while two items were left with bond performance weakened after six hours of usage in high temperature (85℃).

Meanwhile, number of consumer complaints with GPS windshield holders stood at 31 cases, 42, and 40 in 2007, 2008, and this year, respectively. Looking at contents of consumer complaints, the most complaints (64 cases, 57%) were made as GPS fall-off caused GPS drop or monitor damage. In particular, in winter (throughout December to February), falling-off accidents took place more often (30 cases or 46.9%).

The KCA requested consumers to fully understand how to use GPS windshield holder in a safety manner and use it with extra care in winter as falling-off accidents are concentrated in winter times.

<Safe use guide for GPS windshield holder>

-      GPS windshield holders are consumables. When a holder that is in use falls off two to three times, users are expected to replace it with new product for safety.

-       When installing a holder, the bottom part of a GPS should be located onto the dashboard of a car. So, even when the holder falls of, the GPS should be kept from coming down.

-      Before attaching the suction cup part of the GPS holder, the windshield surface should be cleaned to get rid of humidity or dust to prevent the particles from being absorbed into the suction cup.

-      When attaching the holder onto the windshield, the suction cup should be adhered closely and the lock knob must be pushed hard for tight installation.

-      Before drive, a driver should lightly pull the holder to check whether it is attached in good condition.

-      As the falling-off risk is higher in winter, attachment of a holder in winter should be made after warming the suction cup.

-      If a suction cup is left in high temperature in summer, it can be transformed. Therefore, a GPS windshield holder should not be exposed to direct sunlight for many hours in summer.
