The Korea Consumer Protection Board (KCPB) carried out a comparative test on 10 types of steam vacuum cleaners available on the market.

□ Similar cleaning function, more effective in removing stains than water-based vacuum cleaners

In order to compare the cleaning function among the different products, the KCPB measured the number of times it took for steam and water-based vacuum cleaners to remove stains from margarine, coffee, egg yolk, rice and color pencils.

Meanwhile, steam vacuum cleaner manufacturers emphasize that their products are able to simultaneously clean and sterilize based on product tests conducted on their own. However, it failed to inform consumers that products were able to clean and sterilize under limited conditions without considering actual factors such as moving speed.

□ Some products dangerous if used without water

Based on the test results, all ten products did not cause electrocution but four of the products were found to need parts exchanges due to defective temperature control devices

Among the tested products, the temperature control device on C3i products (modelCS-300A) burned and water cases (synthetic resin) of Korea ITS melted. In a simulation test to see if rust is formed after using the product for a year, the heat surface either rusted or alien substances were found in the water tanks in all the products tested.

Based on the above results, the KCPB recommended manufacturing companies to exchange parts and to make structural improvements among defective products. Furthermore, it advised consumers to use clean water in order to reduce foreign substances in water tanks, to keep the lid closed when using the steam vacuum cleaners, to never keep the steam vacuum cleaners in places with low heat resistance such as vinyl flooring, and to refrain from connecting the cords with other electrical products.
